Should Manufacturers Support the Entire Product Lifecycle with Services?

The growing trend to develop product–service innovation (PSI) in manufacturing industries has forced firms consider the real impact of adding services their sales portfolio. Literature shown that PSI implementation heterogeneous effects on performance as it depends service development choice and specific industry which compete. Moreover, differing depending manufacturer’s position value ecosystem. Although PSI–performance relationship previously been studied terms its intensity, research not yet examined whether should support stages or entire product lifecycle. For shedding light this issue, a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) is carried out sample Basque operate machine sector. This useful technique uncovers set combinations maximize manufacturers’ profit margin ratio solvency. As result, study novel analyzing provision over lifecycle reveals although some complementarities do exist, single bundled specialization outperforms an integral diversified approach.
